A Champaign News-Gazette
All-State selection in 1961, Smith played eight years in the National
Football League as an offensive lineman. After playing college ball at
the University of Michigan, Steve was selected in the fifth round of the
1966 NFL Draft. Smith played defensive end for the Pittsburgh
Steelers, Minnesota Vikings and Philadelphia Eagles from 1966-1974, playing
in 100 NFL contests. Smith scored an unusual touchdown on the game's
opening kickoff when he recovered a fumble and returned it for a score
against the St. Louis Cardinals in 1971. |
