PAUL SPLITTORFF -- Arlington |
||||||||||||||
A two-sport All-West
Suburban Conference athlete, Splittorff went on to pitch in the Major
Leagues for fifteen seasons from 1970 to 1984. Paul was among the
conference scoring leaders in basketball in his senior season, averaging 18
points per game. Originally a left-handed firstbaseman, Splittorff was
converted to a pitcher in high school and recorded a 7-1 record helping the
Cardinals to a runner-up finish in the 1964 WSC baseball standings.
Although still inexperienced on the mound, Paul went to Division II
Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa where he played both sports.
During his junior year, Splittorff was selected by the expansion Kansas City
Royals in the 25th round of the 1968 MLB June Amateur Draft. Paul
would pitch his entire big league career with the Royals, winning 166 games
and striking out 1,057 batters. In 1973, Splittorff became the first
Kansas City Royals pitcher in franchise history to win 20 games in a season.
Splittorff was inducted into the Royals Hall of Fame in 1987. |
