RANDY POFFO -- Downers Grove North |
||||||||||||||
A two-time All-West
Suburban Conference selection in 1970 and 1971, Poffo never made it to the
big leagues in baseball, but went on to become one of the greatest pro
wrestlers in history, known as Randy "Macho Man" Savage. Poffo was a
switch-hitting catcher who led the Chicagoland area in hitting over a
two-year stretch -- batting .500 as a junior and setting a state record with
a .525 average as a senior. Despite going undrafted, Poffo signed with
the St. Louis Cardinals organization, and batted .291 in the Rookie League.
Randy would play in the minor leagues for four years before moving on to the
professional wrestling circuit. Poffo captured six world championship
titles in his 32-year career, including two as World Wrestling Federation
World Heavyweight Champion and four as a World Championship Wrestling World
Heavyweight Champion. Poffo was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame,
and was a charter member of the Downers Grove North Hall of Fame. |
