GEORGE PLASKETES -- Riverside-Brookfield |
||||||||||||||
A 1972 All-State
quarterback, Plasketes helped guide the Bulldogs to their best West Suburban
Conference finish on the gridiron since 1936. Recognized by the
Champaign-News Gazette as one the state's best signal callers, George guided
Riverside-Brookfield to within one-half game of winning the conference
crown. After quarterbacking Ole Miss for two years, Plasketes would
switch to the defensive line at the University of Mississippi and become one
of their most memorable players. George tallied 15 tackles against
Notre Dame in 1977, dealing the Irish their only loss in their National
Championship season -- which still dates as one of the school's biggest
victories. Plasketes would become a popular figure around campus and
was voted as the school's Colonel Rebel, a long-standing tradition bestowed
to the highest honorary position for male students on campus.
Plasketes was drafted in the 1978 NFL Draft but did not play professionally.
