LARRY KELLY -- Maine East |
||||||||||||||
As a seventeen-year-old junior, Kelly won the 1964 Illinois High School Association 880-yard run in impressive fashion by setting a national record best time of 1:50.4. All six contestants in the race beat the existing state record, and Larry won the race finishing 15 yards ahead of the second place finisher. Kelly would hold the state's all-time best mark in the half-mile run for the next thirteen seasons. Kelly went on to star at the University of Tennessee, winning five Southeastern Conference individual titles and being a three-time collegiate All-American.
