LOU SABAN -- Lyons Township |
||||||||||||||
|
Although he was best
remembered for his post-playing career, Saban was a two-sport all-state
athlete for the Lions. Lou was named to the 1939 Champaign
News-Gazette All-State Football Team as a halfback, leading the West
Suburban Conference in scoring. At the 1940 IHSA state track meet,
Saban captured the state title in the shot put. At Indiana University,
Saban was an All-Big Ten selection at quarterback, and the most valuable
player for the Hooisers in 1942. Lou also won the Big Ten shot put
championship at the 1943 conference meet. After serving in World War
II, Saban was selected in the 1944 NFL Draft as a linebacker, but joined the
Cleveland Browns of the new All-America Football Conference. Lou was a
two-time All-Pro selection in 1948 and 1949, and helped lead the Browns to
four straight AAFC titles. Saban would go on to coach football for 50
years at the collegiate and professional levels, including being the NFL
head coach of the Boston Patriots (1960-1961), Denver Broncos (1967-1971),
and the Buffalo Bills (1972-1976). Saban was inducted into the Greater
Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in 1994. |
