BILL VANDEMERKT -- Riverside-Brookfield

The Bulldogs head football coach from 1962 through 1981, VandeMerkt was Athletic Director at R-B for twenty years.  Despite having the smallest school, in terms of enrollment, in the West Suburban Conference for the entire duration of his coaching career, VandeMerkt's teams posted seven seasons where they finished .500 or had a winning record in West Suburban Conference play.  Bill's 1972 squad came within a half-game of winning the WSC crown, as the league race was decided on the final day of the season.  VandeMerkt served as Athletic Director, starting in 1980 and continuing beyond the Bulldogs exit from the conference in 1992.  The Thanksgiving basketball tournament at Riverside-Brookfield is named after him.  VandeMerkt was inducted into Illinois High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1991.
