MIKE POWELL -- Oak Park-River Forest |
||||||||||||||
A state champion wrestler at Oak Park-River Forest, Powell returned to his alma mater to coach the Huskies to two dual team state championships and seven West Suburban Conference titles. Powell won Illinois High School Association state titles as head coach in 2009 and 2014. Mike's teams captured WSC Silver Division championships in 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014. In Powell's 11 years of coaching, OPRF won eight team regional titles and five IHSA sectional titles. In 2009, Powell was diagnosed with polymyositis, a rare autoimmune disease that results in destruction of muscle cells. Despite the setback, Powell continued to coach and teach, and would win another state title. Both Sports Illustrated and ESPN did documentaries on his battle. Powell was inducted into the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Hall of Fame in 2014, and was presented with the Medal of Courage by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2015.
