MARTY RIESSEN -- Hinsdale Central |

A four-time tennis singles
state champion, Riessen never lost a match or a set in his four-year high
school career. Marty won the Illinois High School Association singles
titles in 1957, 1958, 1959 and 1960. In his senior year, Riessen won
49 of his 53 sets by perfect 6-0, 6-0 scores, and lost only nine games all
season. An exceptional athlete, Marty was All-State in basketball and
was the Most Valuable Player of the Red Devils tennis, basketball and
cross-country teams. At Northwestern University, Riessen reached the
NCAA singles finals three straight years in 1962, 1963 and 1964. As a
professional tennis player, Marty won 75% of his singles matches and
compiled a 675-226 win-loss record, and was ranked as a high as the number
eight player in the world. Riessen won 62 career titles, including
nine Grand Slam doubles and mixed doubles championships in the
Australian Open (1969), French Open (1969, 1971), Wimbledon (1975) and the
U.S. Open (1969, 1970, 1972, 1976, 1980). Riessen is enshrined in the
United State Tennis Association Hall of Fame. |
